Heart of Life/Coeur de la vie: Day/Jour III

By | 2017-11-01T00:51:52+00:00 novembre 1st, 2017|Retraites au coeur de la vie, Textes|

Wish I didn't have to write these posts first thing in the morning. I'd love to sit back and let the day unfold, then reflect on it all in the evening. But I need to let that go. It's more important that I put something here to get our new retreat day started. Today, I'm again [...]

Morning again in Montreuil, a new day with cat and tea. Brilliant sun, impeccable blue sky. Loved reading everyone's posts from Day I. I want to hear more and more of your stories. Seems I can't get enough, there's so much to report. Keep it coming, in English, French, Portuguese, Flemish, German...! Myself, I can't [...]

This is the first day of our retreat, the morning of the last Monday in October. Here in Montreuil, I'm having some tea with the cat before heading into the activities of the day -- sitting, Skype appointments, paperwork, Portuguese lesson (sim, é verdade!), more sitting. After the time change here in Europe, sun is [...]

After a very long break due to the woes of computer technology, I'm finally returning to my beloved zenscribe posts! And keeping my fingers crossed that this post will in fact appear: I discovered just now that nothing in the interface looks like it did before... Change happens, of course, everywhere, every moment. Everything is [...]

Winter moon, endangered planet

It's still cold here in Paris, and the skies are pristine blue, different shades by day and night. Not a cloud in sight. But the pollution is so bad that the mayor has established alternate-day rules for cars: Only cars with even-numbered license plates could circulate today, tomorrow only odd numbers can circulate. And public [...]

A perfect place to begin

By | 2016-11-27T16:57:00+00:00 novembre 27th, 2016|Retraites au coeur de la vie, Textes|

Sunday afternoon in Montreuil, overcast sky. Unlike this morning, when there was a brilliant sun illuminating the Place Jean Jaurès, which was filled with people buying bread, groceries, flowers, the Sunday papers, visiting the Christmas market in the chill. I was again struck by how different this neighborhood has become since I moved here 20 [...]

The day after: Yes we (still) can

So very difficult to know what to say today and how. And yet I know, like it says in the title of a Japanese Zen master's book: You have to say something. So I will say something, and it's quite simple: Today, my outrage and that of millions and millions of other Americans is unfathomable. As [...]

Thanks for a perfect beginning

Our opening night last week still seems like a dream. It was a perfect evening, from the dedication ceremony to Norman Fischer's great talk and discussion with participants to the festive party and cleanup that followed. I am particularly grateful to my teacher, Roshi Catherine Genno Pagès, for her presence and for her tireless devotion [...]
