That’s life

A minor disruption in my quiet Sunday night: I had just finished writing something to post here about the end of our retreat when somehow it all got wiped out. Gone forever. Like the retreat... Now what? At the end of a retreat I attended some years ago, an anxious participant asked my teacher's teacher what [...]

Not much time to post this morning between sitting and moving on into the rest of the day. Some days are like that... Magnificent sun in Paris this morning. Nothing can resist the light, the warmth that it offers. And what can each of us offer? Everything! In Zen, we seek to prepare and offer [...]

Early morning in Paris, only a moment before heading off to work. Worked yesterday, too, so my sitting was brief, brief but whole, nothing outside of it for those few minutes. What lies ahead today? Open your beginner's mind and you will be showered with the marvels all around. Our question today is: What is [...]

Good morning to all from Paris. What lies ahead today? More adventures for us all. Yesterday was all about "I": "I" did some sitting with "I," "I" forgot a Skype session, "I" cleaned out a book shelf and parted with many bits of "I" that "I" had been keeping for reasons only "I" knows, "I" [...]

Good morning/Bonjour/Bom dia from Paris. Here we are on the second day of our plunge... Surrounded by a halo of wispy clouds, there was a lovely thin slice of moon high in the dark sky last night as we came into the street after sitting. Today is something different altogether. But what is it? Or even better: [...]

Heart of Life/Coeur de la vie: Day/Jour I

Good morning from Paris. Here's what I'm thinking about today: When I was a child in America, there was a program on television called "This Is Your Life." A person who had secretly been selected to be the subject was called on stage and his or her entire life was presented, from childhood to present, [...]

Remember what John Lennon famously said? "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans." And what Confucius said? "We have two lives. The second one starts when we realize we only have one." So if you want to stop making all those plans and realize your one and only life, join Wild Flower [...]

Sweet scrap of light

Brilliantly pale winter sun is stunning the day since early morning here. I breakfast, shower, dress, tend to some business with students, do laundry, make tea, fill a few notebook pages, visit the cat upstairs, catch up with news of bus crashes, elections, resignations, victories and defeats, have lunch... The sunny day goes on, meanwhile. [...]
